Groups within TLA
TLA's organizational structure is designed to be flexible in order to respond to changing member interests and needs. Unit officers and members of divisions, round tables, interest groups, and districts – as well as members of TLA committees and task forces – carry out the organization's ambitious programs. Orientation materials and administrative forms are indexed in the Officer Resource Center.
TLA facilitates communications within its groups by managing online forums available in MyTLA. Membership in these online forums is automatic based on the preferences filled out during the membership enrollment or renewal process. TLA also allows members to create their own forums so that they may connect with their peers in supplemental ways beyond traditional organization groups.
Most of the TLA groups have a separate presence on this website where you'll find information on their unit activities and resources. The internal organizational structures are:
TLA Divisions – representing the 4 different types of Texas libraries:
- The College and University Libraries Division promotes the interests of libraries and librarians in Texas universities and in community, junior, and senior colleges.
- The Public Libraries Division provides a forum for communication to all concerned with public library service in Texas.
- The Special Libraries Division furthers the activities of the special libraries and librarians in Texas.
- The Texas Association of School Librarians provides activities designed to promote library services and librarianship in school libraries in Texas.
TLA Interest Groups (IG)
These units enable TLA members to organize into areas of emerging interest. Interest Groups may be formed through a petition signed by 60 TLA members and must have at least 50 members per year for a period of three years at which time they become a Round Table.
- Continuing Education Providers IG provides a discussion forum for continuing education providers and staff development personnel in Texas Libraries and systems.
- Disability and Aged Issues IG
- Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered IG addresses issues of concern to constituent library staff and patrons.
- Programming for Adults IG addresses the needs of those who plan, organize, or implement adult programs.
TLA Round Tables (RT)
There are currently 26 TLA Round Tables, reflecting the diverse interests of the Association's members. From the playful Doo-Wops – established "to promote pitch, harmony and levity in TLA!" – to round tables based on professional interests such as archives, collection development, programming for youth, and reference, the groups within TLA work together to ensure the vitality of libraries and librarianship in the state. In addition to profession-based groups, there are round tables created by lay and vendor members of the library community.
Each of the ten (10) regional districts within TLA holds an annual fall meeting in order to conduct business, discuss library issues, and offer continuing education programs. Membership in a District is automatic based on residence. The District Meeting page provides officer contact information and details of the district gatherings.
Much of TLA's work is accomplished through various standing and ad hoc committees. Service on these committees is by appointment only. To be considered for appointment, please submit a Committee Volunteer Interest Form.
