District 1
Serving the Big Country and the Concho Valley
Welcome to District 1 of the Texas Library Association! Our District's membership includes over 200 Librarians, Staff, Trustees, full-time Library students, and other interested individuals representing school, public, academic, and special libraries. We are located in the "Big Country" and Concho Valley regions of Mid-West and West Texas as depicted in the image of Texas. Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston are all to our east, and Lubbock and El Paso lie to our west. The major metropolitan areas within this region consist of Abilene (MSA pop. 157,322) and San Angelo (MSA pop. 104,830). District 1 includes 32 Texas counties with a total population of 473,203 covering over 34,257 square miles.
Environmentally, this diverse area can be divided a variety of ways: by geology, weather, water resources, vegetation, etc. However, perhaps the most helpful and detailed way of characterization is by Land Resource Region, which then provides additional information regarding the other categories. District 1 is primarily composed of the Texas North-Central Prairies, Central Rolling Red Plains, and Edwards Plateau; but some counties also contain land within the West Cross Timbers, Texas Central Basin, and the Southern Desertic Basins, Plains, and Mountains.
